I recently decided that the effort to get my original consoles working was too much so I looked toward RetroPie: an amazing piece of software that sits on top of a Raspberry Pi that allows you to play retro gaming console games. To enjoy these games today I must dust off my original Nintendo 64 (20 years old now!), fight asthma to blow into each cartridge a dozen times, and flip the power button with the hope that the game will start. They didn't have the graphics but the gameplay was outstanding. Games like Mario 64, GoldenEye, Mario Kart 64, and Ocarina of Time were incredible. While I enjoy playing new games these days, I do long for the retro gaming systems I had when I was a kid: the original Nintendo (NES), Nintendo 64, Sega, and so on. It is very similar to the normal process of changing the Pi’s password as explained in my How to Change the Raspberry Pi Password tutorial.Today we get to play amazing games on our super powered game consoles, PCs, VR headsets, and even mobile devices. You can do this using “passwd” on the command-line or via the Raspi-Config utility. Putty is another popular choice for Windows users.įinally, the popularity of the Pi means it is important to change the default password. I tend to use the free MobaXterm client to access my Pi systems via SSH. This IP address can then be used in your SSH tool to access the system from your laptop or PC. Simply launch the RetroPie Configuration page as you did in Step 1. It’s easy to find the IP address of your RetroPie system.
Step 3 – Getting the Raspberry Pi IP Address If you haven’t changed it the default username/password will be pi/raspberry. SSH will be enabled and ready for use once the system has rebooted. Select “Restart System” from the next menu :Īnswer “YES” to the “Really Restart?” confirmation :
Press the “Start” button on your controller to bring up the RetroPie system menu and select “Quit” : RetroPie SSH has been enabled but for the changes to take effect you will need to reboot your RetroPie system. You will be returned to the RetroPie interface. Use the Right control to highlight and the B button to activate : Use the Up/Down controls to select “Interfacing Options”. This will launch the standard “Raspi-Config” utility that you may have already used on the Pi. SSH is a great way to add new ROMs to your retro gaming system and edit Gamelist XML files.Īssuming you have a network enabled RetroPie system running enabling SSH should only take a few minutes.įrom the main RetroPie screen navigate to the “RetroPie” system :įrom here select the “Raspi-Config” utility : Follow this quick tutorial to enable SSH in RetroPie and allow remote connections.
The RetroPie SSH interface is disabled by default.
